Welcome to Hikou webpage
Hikou, the Japanese Poem Chanting, is one of the oldest of Japanese traditional and vanishing culture.
Since ancient time when Japanese poems first began, poems were chanted. When chanted, the poems come alive surpassing the meaning and content of the words, and with this they move people’s hearts. This chanting tradition, however, was lost in history. Today, almost all of the poems are not made for chanting but for silent reading. Poems, which are not chanted, lose their vitality.
We will contribute to embody the spirit of Hikou, to spread it all over the world, and to transmit this vanishing culture to posterity.
